I'm just about 20 weeks pregnant and plan on setting up the crib this week. As time gets closer I'll set up the swing, the stroller, and well.. everything else I've already bought. I'd say that once past the first trimester, in most cases, anytime is a good time to be prepared. I think I'm more up to getting all this stuff done now then when I'm much further along and having problems getting around.
As for the rest of your question. It very well could be labor. Call your doctor/midwife and explain what you're feeling. They'll give you some ideas. If they tell you not to go to the hospital quite yet - they may be wrong though. You'll know when you need to be there.

With my first, I had everything up and ready by the time I had 1 month to do. I'm 21 weeks pregnant now and we've already purchased our next crib and it's up....it was used and a good deal so we bought it and since we had it, we put it up.....
I don't think you are too early.

Id say its just about time. However to each their own. Id say you could go at anytime.
With my son (first child) I had everything set up by 20 weeks. Did open bedding until the night before i was induced.
with my daughter I didnt set it up until a few dys after my daughter was born. In fact I did not even buy her crib or anything eles except a few diapers, and a bassenette , and a few pieces of clothes until after. The pregnancy before was still born, and i just couldnt .
I dont think I put her down enough in the first few days to need one lol.

I am 35 weeks and we finished putting up the crib this past weekend. You can deliver any day at this point, so it is better to be prepared.

If you're dilated at all, I'd start getting that crib ready; if you're hurting that badly, it's time to get to the ER.
