I suspect your sound card driver has gone AWOL. To check, hold down the Windows key and press pause|break. This will bring up your system properties. Click the hardware tab, then the device manager button. In the device manager window, near the bottom is Sound, Video and Game Controllers click the "+" next to it. Your sound card driver should appear in this list - if there is a problem with a device, the list will already be open and a yellow "?" will be next to the offending device.

If it does: right click it, then click properties in the context menu. The properties window will open; at the bottom there is a drop-down box under the heading "device usage". In the box it should say "use this device (enable)". If it doesn't, change it. You may also have a device conflict (the large box, just above device usage). If it reports a conflict or other problem here, click the troubleshoot button to start Windows troubleshooter - this should resolve the problem.

If it doesn't: you need to re-install your sound card driver. It should be on a disc that came with your PC - if not, you will need to determine the make and model (if you don't already know it) of your sound card (see below), download and install it.

To determine the make and model of your sound card (the easy, non-invasive way): start the add hardware wizard from control panel. when the dialog opens, click next to detect any orphan hardware attached to your system. Your sound card may be detected - if it is make a note of the make and model. If this doesn't work, see below.

The other way (only works if the card is not on-board - if it is, the ports for it will be near the keyboard and mouse ports - you will also have a driver disc for this type): Open the case, find the the sound card and remove it. Power-on your PC and wait for everything to load. Shut it down again and re-install the card. Power-on again - the card should now be detected.

Good luck.

depends on the computer you have. I solved the problem by opening the controll pannel, then open system, then click on device manager, go down the list until you find sound, video and game etc, if you see a Yellow ! mark you have a fault, click on the + and select an option, right click on the mouse and click on refresh. If this does not work it will prompt yopu to insert disc that came with the computer. It should then re-programme
