It's not so much the chance of your conceiving, but the damage you will do to the baby in the very first few weeks - before you will know you are pregnant. If you are trying to have a baby, stop drinking and smoking NOW, same with your husband, and take prenatal vitamins as well - before you are pregnant. (new study just out yesterday found it prevents certain childhood cancers).

I don't think that either will hurt your chances of conceiving although I would try to quit both before you start "trying". In men heavy smoking and/or drinking can lower sperm count but I don't think it will hurt ovulation. The reason you should quit before trying is because some women get pregnant and don't know it for a few weeks and in some cases months. These early days are the most important to the development of the baby and you would not want to be giving the baby alcohol. As for smoking, you can say that you will quit but if you get pregnant and then quit your baby will go through the nicotine withdrawl that your body feels. The best thing to do is to get your body into the best physical shape you can before trying to have a baby. Good Luck!

Me and my GF got pregnant while she was on the pill, I smoke and both of us were falling down drunk that night. Plus she didnt know she was prego for a good 2 weeks and got drunk an additional time after conception, and she also went to the Dentist, had anethesia to get wisdom teeth pulled as well as had an X-Ray
After we found out, she also was rear ended on a freeway and the other driver was in a coma. Totalled both cars. At some point during the ultra sound they discovered "sandal gap toe" and as pissy as doctors are now adays, did absolutely nothing but create controversy that the baby could have downs syndrome. Even though the gap toe thing runs in my entire family..
Oct of 95 we had a baby boy, perfectly healthy and the nurse even told us that he had the most sensitive hearing of any baby she's ever tested. Whatever thats good for.. He's 16 months old now and youd never had known that the world doomed him long before he ever had a chance but he still came out fine.

Some studies say it can cause a decrease in fertility but I have yet to see anything that comes with a warning label that says *this product is an effective method of birth control*.many women smoke and drink and manage to concieve, the latter being the reason many women concieve accidentally..lol.At 23 you are in the very fertile window and unless you have other underlying health issue's I doubt it will have any effect on your ability to concieve. A lot of studies are contradictory and just like with anything else common sense and moderation are a good way to go.

No way, you're young and usually this means very fertile until you get into your 30s when it starts to drop a little.
