Instead of a system that tries to make all groups as unevenly matched as possible, how about one that has the top 8 teams in Group A; teams 9-16 in Group B; teams 17-24 in Group C; teams 25-32 in D; .... (based 30%+25%+20%+15%+10% on the results from the five last World & European Cups & s qualifyings).

So instead of the current 12 games in uneven qualifying groups plus up to six games in the finals competition, there would either be 14 round-robin games or less (10) if all groups are cut in half after the first seven rounds.

Then there is ALSO to be a knockout competition containing teams A2-A6, B1-B5, C1-C4, D1-D4, E&F&G 1-3. (as there are 27 teams in this, the five first round byes go to A2 A3 B1 B2 & C1).

And before next year's competition, teams play-off in defence of their upper level status: A6v B3, A7vB2 for a place in GpA, A8vD1,B6vC3...for a place in GpB,...

In WorldCupqualifying 4 outcomes are possible: those that need2win 1of2 playoff games; 2/2; 0 .

If we use this system also for World Cup qualifying then 4 outcomes are possible:
the top six teams qualify straight out of their group (A1-5 + B1);

the next best 8 teams (eg A6, B2, C1) will need to win either playoff round one OR two;

a further 8 teams (eg B6, C3, F1) can still qualify if they win BOTH the first play-off AND the second playoff match in which the 4 losers of the higher 8 playoffs play the 4 winners of the lower 8.

(& the 4th outcome eg F8,G7 is those that did not manage to qualify for the playoff rounds)

Yes I like that idea very much and can see it working. Great stuff!

Firstly it´s too complicated and it seems to be getting mixed with FIFA also.

Secondly, the idea is to find the best, and as unfair as it might seem to you, if the smaller teams can´t compete in the qualifyers they aren´t any more likely to do so in the finals.

To run a little with your idea, you could seperate the top best in one set of groups and the bottom in another for the qualifiers and then play the finals as normal, with seeded teams in each group etc.

Of course every system has it´s faults, this one could lead to the better teams deliberately dropping down the ranks to gain an advantage. I doubt it would happen, but the possibilities there.

Some how i think things will stay roughly as they are and it´s probably for the best.

no they should put all the teams in the same pot.and who gets draw with who ever.but they dont do that today.because.they try to keep all the so called big teams apart.so they can stay in the contest and make more money.and dont give the small teams
a chance.in case the small team knock out the big team.football
today is like everything else.its false feed to people who would not know a good football match if it bit then on there ***.its style over subtance.

I suppose it needs sorting out with the smaller nations , they are humiliating themselves against Italy,Germany,England,Holland and other big countries , maybe its time to start a second round for all teams ranked below - say 16th - to qualify for the qualifiers

Sounds FAR too complicated, - even, to ME, - and, I got myself an A-Level, in MATHS. They're SPORTSMEN, - not GENIUSES, - though, a FEW "QUALIFY" as "GENIUSES", with the ball, at their feet, - players, like, THIERRY HENRY, and STEVEN GERRARD, M.B.E.! Simplify the system, a bit, - otherwise, NOBODY will be able to UNDERSTAND how it's supposed to WORK!
