Oedipus inteligence causes his original problems when he solves the riddle. It then leads him to question the problems in Thebes. It then tells him to send Creon to Hades and finally it tells him to ask Phobras. Not too intelligent when he rips his eyes out though.

Oedipus' basic flaw lies in his name because not only does it mean 'swollen foot' it is also a pun on the Greek word ouida, which means to know. It is through his desire to know about his past that he discovers the truth about his life which of course, destroys him: he was lover to his mother, which makes Antigone both his sister and daughter. Read Oedipus Tyranous, Antigone and Oedipus at Colonus, otherwise known as The Three Theban Plays.
