i have just started with torrents. seems like no matter what downloader i use and what torrent site i use my downloads are still slow (i am talkin like 5-20k per sec) and i am used to downloading at atleast 300kps. what can i do to speed up my downloads

Depends on what torrent client you have. Generally, somewhere in preferences, sets higher number for connections per task, and sets global maximum connections number twice of connections per task.

The simplest is to actually allow higher upload rates for your downloads, since usually if you set the upload rate too low for your downloads, your download rate will suffer as well.
