Honestly it depends on your budget and what your are looking for. Compaq are not a good choice under any circumstance. HP are exspensive. Toshiba's are intermediate and alright. Dell are great if you invest in an accidental damage warranty. The budget ones usually break down within the first year but if you AD they have to fix it for free! If you can afford 2 to three thousand a dell XPS is your best bet! People say that DELLs break down and within the first year they break once or twice, but after that they last really well. I have several DELL and have found that if you are on a tight budget you can get a great computer for under 1200!

As yet another reported, you do not have adequate tips to make the acquisition. For an paintings college pupil, a Mac perhaps extra useful than a homestead windows based equipment. My suggestion is which you get or make up a very good card and interior it placed a notice say that once Christmas you get him a own workstation of his decision of as much as $xxxx. Sitting consisting of him in front your workstation for learn how to locate the appropriate gadget is an spectacular discern-son pastime. For a working laptop or workstation functional for paintings and image layout, your are observing $1500- min, and probable extra.

in my humble opinion,
ibm is rather expensive but have an excellent durability and performance (with the trade off of bad design) and also high quality of networking capability
toshiba is not as expensive as ibm (at the same level of laptop) but quite good at overall performance and its speaker (harman/kardon)
dell is rather cheap and have a fair quality and performance
acer is the cheapest laptop (especially the aspire and travel mate series) at the same level compared to others, but u can get a very high specifications with just a little money. although the trade off is that the laptop is not very durable..
i dont know much about sony vaio (i heard that sony is quite expensive) and mac..

All this really depends on the purpose of ur buying one! I mean is it for professional use or just as an entertainment at home! Make that clear and then pick one accordingly!

I recently upgraded my laptop from Acer to HP. HP is really good.
Only draw back I see in Hp is the freebees they offer. By the time you get it yr computer is obsolete.

not dell.... i've seen lots of problems, including 'oversale' to folks who are just not savy with this stuff, and the support is rotten!
i bought a toshiba 'tecra' for the mrs. and it works light lightning, and costs not a lot, hell i bought one for myself for working as the local 'c.g.' and it's totally worth it.
