Yeah, you can press the button and if you run Windows XP, you will lose the settings. Therefore, the next time you start Windows, it won't run properly. So, go ahead and press the button rather than wait 30 seconds or so for the system to shut down properly.

It's not a good thing to shut down the computer through the button on the CPU. You should the old fashioned way, clicking shut down which could be found at the start button.

No it is not ok to do it that way. It will kill your harddrive and computer. When windows shuts down it locks your harddrive read/write heads so that no damage is done, when you push the powere button on the computer case it does not allow that to happen.

Its not recommended. alot of operating systems actually write logs, shut down background programs, etc just before you shut down. Turning off the power is not a good idea unless the computer has crashed.

You hate to do it? Do you also hate flossing after brushing, picking up your dirty socks and tossing them in the hamper, putting your cigs out in the ashtray, or putting away the towels after folding them?
Puh-LEASE!!!!! It is the proper way to shut down and IBM PC that uses ANY Windows OS. Take that extra 45 seconds and treat your PC properly.
