If you actually read the BNP's manifesto you will see that although the racism is there (and make no mistake those idiots are bigoted) it is between the lines.
As well as being racist they are also extremely sexist.
Anyone that wants to vote for them is clearly and idiot because quite frankly some of their policies are hysterical. They want to take Britain back to last century. Their economic policies have 0 chance of ever succeeding as do their plans for the NHS and schools. The manifesto reads like something a few drunk blokes came up with down the pub although it is very eloquent and appealing the content is rubbish.
The BNP has to exist because of free speech look into it a bit more and enjoy the fact that all the idiots who vote for them are ill-educated numpties.

The reason you are "bewildered" is because you are obviously too young/naive/ignorant to understand democracy and how the political system works in a free country like the UK.
Let me explain. Its called Free speech. If we censor theirs then we have to censor yours.
Do you want to give that up? Thought not.
You can't lock someone up or dissolve a political party because you disagree with their views!!! Thats not how democracy works and thankfully we do live in a democracy.
You can only prosecute them if they break the law - ie they go out and attack someone, actively incite violence and suchlike. They can demonstrate all they want same as Muslims can demonstrate with placards that read "Death to those who insult Islam". Want to lock them up as well or just the BNP?
And, as for "spreading hatred" there are plenty of parties and organisations who do that - the black power movements in America that teach that all white people are "evil", the Islamic Extremists who teach that all non-muslims are "Kufrs" and should be killed, any Nationalist movement that claims to be superior to another nation or people. If we banned the BNP all the others would have to be banned too.
The world isn't fair, get over it.

While the BNP are of course extremists it would be wrong for a government to ban them unless they are a danger to national security - it depends whether you think non-violent racism is a danger or not. While the BNP admit to thinking white people are better than others they do not say those who aren't white should be killed or forcibly thrown out of the country - if they (or those who support them) did THEN you can arrest them, because that's incitement to violence.
People have the right to believe in what they want if it's harmless (again with the "is racism harmless?" thing), even if the majority think they're a load of nutters. A government banning a "peaceful" organisation would be guilty of surpressing free speach.
The thing to do would be to prove the BNP are a hate organisation - then you can get them banned and the world will be a better place for it.

It's called Free Speech
When the BNP is suspected of overstepping the mark and making racist remarks or encouraging racism then they are prosecuted. Most attempted prosecutions have failed because in these instances they have been judged to either NOT be racist or to be telling the truth, no matter how unpalatible that may seem to the over-sensitive politically-correct brigade.
I do not support the BNP but I support their right to exist. I would much rather live in a country where political parties are permitted freely to express their views and opinions and hold themselves up for election than a country where all opposing views are suppressed and freedom of speech and opinion is stifled, as is seen in many of the nations that the BNP themselves warn against.
The fact that BNP representatives get elected means that the majority of people in those areas or constituencies agree with their opinions... people are not going to change their opinions just because the BNP ceases to exist, the BNP merely gives voice to a majority of people who hold those views. If you don't like it then vote for someone else; if the party you support gets less votes than the BNP then try to remember that this country is still a democracy and the majority view has a right to prevail.
If you don't like living in a democracy, I'm sure there are plenty of totalitarian one-party states that would welcome you. Just as many patriotic Brits are leaving to live abroad because they're fed up with feeling like strangers in their own country so there's no border control to stop you leaving and finding somewhere to live where there are secret police, political oppression, arrests without trial and religious dictatorship.

Your question implies that this country is not a democracy. If the BNP flout the law, the individuals are prosecuted - usually, unsuccessfully. If those they rile against flout the law, prosecutions follow at a slower pace and are usually successful. Always there are two sides to any discussion point and certainly there are with your question.

If they were driven underground their views would become even more extreme. I'm not prepared to take that chance.
This question has already been debated - at least at the ballot box we have the chance to hit them where it hurts. Do something useful and join Unite Against Fascism for example, instead of seething behind your computer!

The asker of this question is a much greater danger to our precious freedoms than the BNP.
God help us all if this sentiment ever became predominant.
And this answer comes from someone who detests the BNP.

Democracy in one word sums it up
the same democracy that allows young
muslim men to wear balaclavas and call for
beheadings and holy wars in the uk
it isnt the people involved in these demos
that are a threat
its the people who take them seriously
that gives them the credibility that they crave for
hyde parks speakers corner was a source of entertainment for most people
but if someone gave the loony speakers a serious
platform yes it becomes dangerous then.

This country and most of the free world is over run with undesirables, most ethnic and driven by fanatical religion's such as Islam,Hindi etc and in the name of their beliefs they create terror on the streets of a once civilized world. I'm thankful that not only they exist but that the general British public have decided that their our only answer to regain control of OUR country. You ask "shouldn't they be behind bar's"? No,they are a registered political party and are following the rules, and while the only violence seems to be coming from the 'far left', they should be the ones behind bars. In fact with the clear anger, aggression and hatred you have for them obvious with the manner in which you type,i think you belong behind bars for showing hostility towards a legal party,in a democratic world which i don't feel your native to. And as far as them "getting away with anything",its you that are getting away with your Racist view against them! Am i wrong? Should i be behind bars? See you at the polling station!
