In recent years the city of Tacoma has cracked down on gang activity, forcing it south into the surrounding communities. Most of the gang activity has moved to Lakewood and some into Spanaway.

Lakewood didn't become a city until 1996 and didn't have a police force. Even once they Incorporated, they still contracted their police force out to the Pierce County Sheriff until recently when the established their own police force.

Spanaway is still part of unincorporated Pierce County relying on the county sheriff.

Both areas have neighborhoods that are more affluent while also having lower class neighborhood. There are "good" and "bad" parts of both towns.

Lakewood and Spanaway are both located near McChord AFB and Ft. Lewis and are "military towns". Many military communities have pockets of nice expensive homes within just a few blocks of "bad" areas.

I grew up in Parkland, which is near Spanaway, and my parents still live in the house I grew up in. I didn't experience much crime in my neighborhood, which could be considered "middle class". The worst thing that happened to my knowledge was the occasional car prowl or teenager sealing from a neighbor. I considered where I lived to be relatively safe. I never feared going outside at night or being home alone. I still don't fear going over to my parents house (I visit at least once a month) and still feel that it's rather safe.

Just Jess gave a terrific answer, and I think I know who Just Jess is! If so... Hey red head!

Anyway... off topic anyhow... Lakewood is worse than spanaway, but because of the military influence and the disparity in income in the Lakewood and Spanaway areas there can be some pretty intense crime problems. You are better moving just a little more east (Parkland and Puyallup). Best of luck to you!

I live in Lakewood. I find it a strange blend of very nice sections and not so nice sections. Generally, areas near Lakewood Towne Center Mall area fairly nice as are most sections along Bridgeport Way north of 100th Street. All areas west along Stellacoom road are also pretty good. The commuter rail system "Sounder" will soon be expanding into Lakewood which will further boost upscale development. Spanaway (to me) is one big trailer park.

Yes it's true. Most of the COPS episodes that are shot in the "Tacoma" area are actually in Lakewood and Spanaway. Lots of gangs and drugs in those areas.

The problem is that they are close to two large military bases. A lot of loose testosterone roaming the streets.
