A PH test would not go a miss this will tell you the acidity of the soil this can then be adjusted, but if its as bad as you say, skim off the remaining turf, rotavate the area, lots and lots breaking the soil down to a fine tilth, rake level and with a hand roller, consolidate the area, sprinkle a little Growmore over the area, then lay turf, this will give you instant cover, keep watered if your doing it during a dry period, after about three weeks the grass will be established and ready for its first cut, but just set your mower on high just so to clip the tops.

Then sit back and enjoy, with something alcoholcy, as your kids/dog rubbish all your hard work or the neighbours cat "VISITS" to do its abdominal work

Is the house itself on a new estate? If so, then there could be a lot of builder rubble underneath the turf. I dug out 15 bags of rubble from a space 12ft * 24 ft and I only dug down a spade depth! If this is the case then taking out the rubble and replacing with good top soil, topping off with new turf or seed is probably the best option.

Good times for lawn treatment are around April and autumn, depending on your area/temperature zone, but if its a complete bust, you may need to start clearing noow!

Try to get The Lawn Expert by Dr. D. G. Hessayon out from the library. His books are usually good reference books.

lawn nearly always grows back but as yours seems not to have done so try aerating he lawn by pushing a garden fork (or use a proper lawn aerate) into the soil every few inches, also get a good lawn feed and follow the instructions on the packet.sow freash lawn seed where needed. the best time for this is between october and march.

Well we had the same problem where we lived in Kent

My Dad would mix up some dirt and sand or compost and sand sprinkle the grass seed over the dirt patched and then sprinkle a light layer of the dirt and sand mix over the top, lightly (Sprinkle) water over and leave. This worked a treat with for my Dad

Hope this helps and good luck
