I'm looking for something interesting for my one-to-one student. He's upper int to advanced. I'm trying to avoid the old 'if you had a million dollars...' stuff. Thanks Much!

I use the lottery win simply to input the structures, then I get students to tell me about something that has happened to them this week and then start asking the "If" questions. Another idea is a short newspaper article about an accident, a robbery or someone's obituary and then discuss alternative outcomes of the story or the person's life using "If ...had, would have ..." structures. This gets you using the 3rd person structures as well as the 1st person. I then go on to tell the story as if it had happened to me and the student can give me advice: "If you had done this, you would have ..." It's all about efficient use of scarece resources.

Good luck with the student.

Why not do something like writing workshop tutors do? Start with a premise - there's a fire in your school or something. Then start asking him questions like "if you didn't have your phone to ring the fire brigade, what would you do", things like that, and write the whole lot down and he'll have a story as well as a lot of conditional practice!
