I came to feed my goldfish at about 8.30 in the morning to find that he had jumped out, i have no idea how long he was out of the water but he was very dry and there was no gill movement at all. I put him back in the water and moved him around and his gills started working again. i did this for about 5 minutes longer and he started to move himself, his fins were stuck to him and his tail was stuck together, these hav opened out and he is usung all but one fin, he seemed to perk up and started swimming about on his own, but he keeps stopping and jst staying near the top of the tank i am unsure what to do, do you think he will survive? any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

It sounds as if you may have got to him just in time and done exactly the right thing. He has had a hell of a shock and needs to recover at his own rate. Do not hassle him and be patient. I had fish that jumped out our pond and had reached the state which you described, some made a complete recovery, others died, but the fact that he is moving is a good sign. There is nothing you can do except be patient, make sure the water is clean and well oxygenated, and perhaps put a piece of netting above the tank to prevent him doing this again when he has completely perked up.

Gold fish are far more hardcore than people give them credit for i once won a fish in a bag at a bonfire night fair, at the time we had just moved into a new house and had not dug our pond yet. so over the winter i had to keep this gold fish in a bucket, this bucket got left out over winter in a secluded spot on our patio and froze solid for around two weeks, come spring time the water defrosted and there very much to my surprise was my fish very much alive and well, the story does however end on a note of tragedy as the poor little guy was devoured by a heron just two days after being transferred into the brand new pond

My fish did that once. I had to clean carpet fibers out of his gills. He was pretty freaked out for a while, and I think the stress allowed an infection to develop in his fins. But he recovered. Just make sure your water parameters are good, and all the usual goldfish stuff.

I hope it survives. It sounds like fighter. I'm no expert, but if it survived being out of water, there's a good chance that it'll get better, just give it time. Good Luck.I hope your fish is back to normal in no time. oh, and try getting a tank with a lid, it'll save you this anxiety in the future. Although be prepared to hear plenty of bumps in the night.

Hi. Do you have an air pump and bubble stone?? This will give him the chance to clear his own gills from carpet fluff.

this happened to me in 1995 as well, one of my fighting fish jumped out of the glass and killed himself :-(, when i woke up his face was all black and i cried

it was my fault coz i put too much water in the glass jar even i knew fighting fish can jump higher than any other fishes

he is probably major stressed and vulnerable to any disease. you might want to put some extra water conditioner in with him to help his slime coat and some aquarium salt and/or melafix to reduce bacteria in the water. if you have any extra antibiotics you might want to dump some of those in there too. be on the lookout for any signs of disease that might pop up. when the slime coat is reduced it allows bacteria and parasites to get to the fish.

sounds like he has a fair chance of surviving. i would keep an eye on him for awhile, and if he's with other fish i would put him in a seperate tank or bowl so they don't attack him.
otherwise, you've done about all you can and it's up to him now!

first get someone to get his tail unstuck to the other parts and each other and he has a very good chance of surviving.
