Yeah I think that they shouldn't pay equal prize money in tournaments such as grandslams where the men have to play more, if the women play the same like in just about every other tournament they should get the same. I also say thet the argument of men being stronger should not count, because this is also the reason men live shorter lives. And as for the idea that they have equal TV time. wrong, many more men's matches are televised, and their matches last for longer.
As for another answerer's suggestionthat men and women play off. That is absolutely ridiculous a man ranked 1 000 could beat the woman No 1. I also beat girls and women at my club who have much higher rankings than me.
besides which Sharapova is the highest paid tennis player!
best tennis question in quite a while

I'm all for them getting the same money as long as they play the same number of sets. Let's not forget that a mans match can go to 5 sets but a womans match can only go to a maximum of 3.
How many ladies singles games have you seen where the score is 6-0 6-1 and over in about 40-50 minutes?
Quite a few i bet.
Whereas it's rare to see a man dominate a match like that. Even the Mighty Federer.
Also the fact that women spen less time on the court gives them the opurtunity to win more money then men by also playing in the Doubles. You'll find a lot more of the top female seeds playing Doubles then you would of the top men seeds.

It's all about do they do the same work, as in equal pay for equal work. You would have to say no as the men have more games to play than women. So you either have women play 5 set matches or reduce the men's matches to 3 sets. I don't think any of us would be too happy if a colleague came to work for 3 days when you are working 5 and received the same wages.

No. Simple as.
In Grand Slam tennis the longest a woman's match can last in 3 sets, the same as the SHORTEST a man's match can last. Why should they get the same amount of money for doing less?
It's clearly NOT equal, so why is it being touted in the name of equality?
EDIT
To those saying the women are playing to the best of their abilities and therefore should get the same amount...
That's like saying someone who gave it their all in the first round but still goes out should get the same as the winner, because he TRIED.

Recently tennis has been played at a very fast pace, especially because of the new technology in the rackets, and the education in physical training.
Nowadays women's tennis could be more exciting to watch, because...
Men's tennis is so fast that points don't last very long. Men, now, can ace his opponent four times in a row (winning a whole game without the other player touching the ball)
With girls tennis, however, their points last longer. And since they don't have the speed or amount of spin the guys do, they have to come up with clever, nifty shots during the point.
The crowds like to watch longer points--not just aces and missed returns all the time.
It's not the sex who puts the most time in it, its who gets the crowd.

I'd say it's fair only because it's a fact that men are physically stronger than women. So for a man to do best of five is equivalent to a woman doing best of three. If men & women had the same strength and endurance then I'd say no.

Well if the game is not the same then no they shouldn't get the same besides they(granted:it's both men and women) earn more from sponsorship deals so less in prize money doesn't make a difference.

Right now, men are playing five sets and women three, right? But (in a realistic point of view), men are physically more capable than women. (I hate to admit it, but it is true). So, basically, my point is that they are playing the number of sets they do based on their capabilities. Women play what they can, while men play what they can. So why shouldn't they receive the same amount of money??

It isn't argument that men play more sets. they do so because they are physically stronger. Women play as much as they can. So both men and women should receive the same prize.

According to me yes men and women should be given equal prize money because this would surely reduce sexial discrimination and I think men and women work hard equally to win a match
