Easter is the feast day of Spring, in honor of the fertility goddess Eostre (also known as Oestre, Ostara, and Ishtar). Her symbols are the moon and the rabbit (some cultures see a rabbit in the moon rather than a face). The egg represents the moon, and of course is also the ultimate symbol of fertility and new life.

People would paint and decorate the eggs, and give as gifts wishing the recipients good luck and prosperity.

The Easter Egg stands for fertility because the Pagans believed that time of spring is when things was the most fertile to reproduce and to bring new life. Easter has nothing to do Jesus as in the Bible Jesus tells us to celebrate the Passover to remember him, that's why he says to eat the bread for his body and drink the wine for his blood right after he does this He says do this In remembrance of me. Luke(22:19)

For eating mainly.

It is a symbol of birth, new life after the winter. Easter was originally a Spring festival which was used by early christians in Europe because of the resurrection idea.

I believe that the egg is meant to symbolize life. The tradition of rolling an egg down a slope (it is a tradition in Scotland not sure about elsewhere) is apparently meant to symbolize the rolling away of the rock that was in front of Jesus' tomb.

However as the whole Easter story is fiction it does not really matter anyway.

Easter was probably taken from the Roman pagan holiday dedicated to Estros, the godess of fertility.

Eggs and rabbits are symbols of fertility and have been associated with pagan springtime rituals for thousands of years.
