I think I like the look of the Eastern Hemlock or Tsuga Canadensis bettter than the Leyland,

I have heard from a nursery that the Leyland is prone to disease and other problems as well.

Leylandii is very hardy - very few problems - sometimes they can be affected by a variety of conditions but on the whole they are pretty bomb proof!

Best thing to do with them (depending on how high you want them) is to let them reach the desired height andthen clip off the tops - leave a season and start to trim the ends of the branches - pretty soon they will thicken up

dont know where you are from but the hemlocks that we grow in tennessee which are candian hemlock are prone to disease and blights also they are not a very fast grower.i work in the nursery here.
