I have tried both and the one I prefer depends on why I am doing the dissection. If I just want to get a general idea of how the animal is set out, the internet is great, it usually shows very good examples of what you would typically see, plus everything is usually labeled.

But if I really want a detailed view of exactly where things are, what they are like from all different angles, differences between individuals or specific things that you just don't notice on a screen, you just can't beat the real thing.

I do not like animals suffering/dying for science unless there is a truly good reason for the research and it is done with respect (no livers flying across the classroom please) and with the minimum possible discomfort for the animal, but if the animal died for other reasons and would have been wasted otherwise (eg by-catch and roadkill) then dissect away I say.

Edit for clarification: If you are just talking about classroom dissections or just for curiosity and not ones for actual research then definitely the net unless you can get hold of roadkill, by-catch or similar.

On the NET, because of the following reasons:

1. Reduces the pain for animals,
2. Saving wildlife,
3. Can be repeated n number of times for better understanding,
4. Parts will be named and better online guidance, etc.,

Moreover, operating on net is more HUMANE.
