For anti-spyware, you should use a minimum of two different programs. I use Ad-Aware and Spybot, as those are the two that are most often highly recommended by major review sites.

For antivirus, don't go the freeware route. Every day a bunch of new viruses get released, but when I had AVG installed I found that they only updated once or twice a week. I'd really recommend using Trend Micro's PC-Cillin, as a low-cost option. For a bit more expense, you can pick up the full Internet Security program, which will include a more robust firewall than what's bundled with your computer, a pop-up blocker that will allow you the option of clearing an individual pop-up when you actually need it to appear, and an anti-spyware program (it takes longer to scan than Ad-Aware, but every day it picks up a few that slipped past Ad-Aware and Spybot on my system).

But the two things that'll probably make a huge difference without having to install any additional software are to set your computer to delete everything in your Temporary Internet Files folder whenever you exit out of your browser (on IE, pull down the Tools menu, click Internet Options, then the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security section, and make sure there's a check next to "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed") and to regularly use the Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter applets (both can be found by pulling up the Start Menu, clicking on All Programs, Accessories, and System Tools).

Making sure the TIF folder is regularly flushed will prevent it from getting clogged up full of useless files that will just sit around and get in the way the next time you surf the net (as well as possibly taking care of a few odd low-level badly-coded Trojan viruses that your antivirus software might have missed). Disk Cleanup will also handle that end, plus give you the option of clearing out your Trash Bin, your Temp Files folder (not the same as Temporary Internet Files), compressing unused files, and other useful space-saving actions. Defragmenting your hard-drive will actually do the most good, as regular use will result in new files being splintered up and scattered around all over the place. Then when your computer needs to access any of them, it has to spend lots of extra time hunting down each individual section instead of being able to just search for one start point and read the rest of it in order.

AVG anti virus/anti spyware remover.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/...

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

(1) If you have not already scanned your comp with spybot do that now .Update it and then run it so it gets rid of all the spyware and trojans in safe mode
(2) Do an online virus scan to check if you still have any other viruses in your computer. And let us know if the online virus scan still finds any virus or spyware .
(3) Get you self a good antivirus or a free one if your present anti virus is not protecting you .

it's been mentioned by some other people, but i really want to recommend AGV antivirus & rootkit. i had a trojan virus on my computer, and hadn't had any luck with other companies trying to solve the problem for me. someone on yahoo recommended downloading AGV from a website called www.ewido.net first of all, download the anti spy software. then run a full check on your computer. this is best done in Safe Mode. if u don't know what that is, here is a brief description: switch your computer off after downloading the AGV thing, switch it back on, and whilst it's switching back on, keep on tapping the F8 key. this will give u the option of working in Safe Mode. the screen will look a little different, don't worry about it. run a complete anti virus check using the AGV antivirus program. when it has finished, select to delete anything bad that it's found. this will probably solve your problems. switch off the computer, and restart in normal mode. do this once a week to keep everything running smoothly. if for some reason u get an error message after selecting to delete everything bad found, then switch off the computer, go back online to ewido, and send an e-mail to their technical support team (this is also a free service). they will send u a link to some software called a Rootkit. u need to download it, switch your computer off, go into safe mode again, and then run the Rootkit. this will literally find the root of your problem and get rid of the virus. after deleting it, switch the computer off and restart. u should find that this has solved your problems, but if not, get back in touch with ewido. good luck - this really helped me to get rid of the problems on my computer, and i was really impressed that the service was free, and that the people at ewido were so helpful.

o.k. Depending on your knowledge and the virus you can try anything suggested (avg for example). BUT try to keep a standard enviroment on your machine or else what goes away may come back very soon. Sometimes backing up everything important then formatting then re installing is the least time consuming way. Afterwards use always top security and updated antivirus - antispyware.

Heres my basic tutoral for virus and spyware

(Please note scans may take long hours... So take a nap while scanning or do other things and turn off anything BESIDES the monitor to save energy)

First, do another scan with your virus protector and/or Internet Security

Then do other online scans

For Online Scans go to:

Windows: http://safety.live.com

Norton/Symantec: http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=JTHVRSJRFSKLUKUMXCC

Mcafee: http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp

If you need spyware protection and removal, use these:

Ad-Aware SE Personal: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

SuperAntiSpyware: http://www.superantispyware.com

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/

AVG Free Anti-Spyware: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5

For Free Virus Protector, use:

AVG Free Anti-Virus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

Avast (your choice): http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html

Use any of these for safety scan, virus and spyware scan and removal. If all finds nothing, your computer is fine.

QUIT CLICKING ON EVERYTHING YOU SEE AND QUIT DOWNLOADING FILES ENDING IN .EXE AND RUNNING THEM!

That will help you against reinfection.

Next I recommend AVG or Avast (both are about the same) as well as spybot search and destroy and AdAware. I've included links to all 3 (in order of mentioning) in my sources.

Also start using Firefox. IE is a piece of ****.

avg has both anti virus and anti spyware. You have to download them separately though.
