I am 16 years old and in the last two years of school. I go to a boarding school and was wondering if noise cancelling headphones would help to block out the noise to help study.
Common noises that I would have to block out: TV (I am a fair way away so it is only a faint noise that isnt there too much, talking, showers and the like.
I'm thinking of the Skullcandy noise cancelling headphones. Any good?
My other alternative is the Skullcandy TI CHick ones (white and pink)

As well as noise cancelling I'd like to be able to use them with my ipod around the place.

Thanks

Yes, noise-cancelling headphones work by either forming a tight seal in your ear canal or a tight seal around your entire ear. They won't cancell all noises, though, unless you get really expensive active noise-cancelling headphones (those that process incoming noise to produce a sound that will actually interfere with the incoming sound vibrations). The noise-cancelling earbuds, however, will actually damage your ear more than any regular headphones at the same volume, as the sound will be generated closer to your eardrum and the lower overall volume of air will produce more direct pressure when the sound-generating membrane in the earbud bows outward (i.e. towards your eardrum). They'll also probably do a better job of actually cancelling ambient noise when not being used to play audio, though. For that matter, though, you could just go to a hardware store and pick up some decent earplugs to use for basic noise-cancelling, and they'll probably cost a lot less.

Noise Cancelling Headphones For Studying

stay away from noise cancellation. Sure it cancels out 20 decibles of sound but generally most ambient noise like on a bus or train is at 30-35 decibles. If you would like some good earphone for your MP3 player and also good sound blocking. You want the SHURE earphones, they are by far the best at blocking out sound and providing the best in ear listening experience. Don't take my work for it, you can demo the SHURE earphone at TWEETER or APPLE stores.

Noise cancellation for use with an MP3 player, is rediculous and the reason why I am saying that is, noise cancellation is just that, cancellation, the outside sound is still entering the headphones and a special technology is used to 'cancel' out the sound which can put impurities in your music listening. Your best bet is to block out the sound not allow it in and cancel it.

Maxell Full-Sized Noise Canceling Headphones HP-NCII

I have this brand of noise-cancelling headphones. I have had them four three years now and they still work great. I highly recommend them. They also are on the cost-effective side of the market when it comes to noise cancelling headphones.

yes the bose over ear headphones are $350 i think, but great to ask your parents for if you'll say it will help with yur studys, and they work wonders. i tried them at target, and it was a busy day, and i had the volume way down, and i couldn't hear a single thing! it was incredibly. the sound quality! dont get me started! ten times better than my 8 speaker surround sound system. the base is so clear, and crisp that you dont want to take them off
