SHE is the most beautiful beta and that is saying a lot because i have a pretty big fear of fish. but she's in a bowl so i'm okay with her. she was given to me as a gift (from my big sis becuase i'm in a sorority - alpha omicron pi). i know because she's a beta, it would be funny to name her alpha and as part of our sorority, we say "alpha love" a lot so it could be cute. she's all red and like i said really pretty. but i'm looking for a serious answer because she's really going to help me get over my fear of fish. please give me your thoughts. thanks.

I actually had a betta named Alpha. She was a pure white female who ruled over my sorority tank (all girl tank of bettas). She was know to bully a 4 inch sailfin molly( x2 her size, and x4 her weight), and once beat up a male when I tried to mate her. She was fearless and would follow my hand around when I cleaned the tank. On several occasions she even bit my arm. (which tickled)

Personally I give them names when they earn them. For example Snail Slayer (a rather antisocial racist who hates black snails). Pretty boy who is the prettiest of my males, and loves to show his finage in a threat display, but is a complete total wuss. Jumper a female who has twice jumped out of her tank while feeding. (Her sister actually died of internal injuries after clearing the counter top.)

In the mean time I'd call him Red until he earns a name.

Haha that is too funny. I just got a male betta and I as well have a fear of fish. I don't ever want to touch him! But he is so beautiful and I love him. I named him Sir Mojorisin. I love the doors and Jim Morrison. In one of their songs there is a line that goes Mr. Mojorisin(Jim Morrison scrambled) and then he has a castle so I knighted him and made him a sir. So I think alpha, for your sor. is a good idea because it means something to you. Yes and if your fish is pretty, it might be a male, so I would check on that too. Males have the long flowing fins where as females are smaller and have shorter fins. Also make sure you have a cover on that bowl because bettas are known for jumping out of their bowls. You may want to upgrade to a 1 gallon or better yet a 2.5 gallon tank with a lid. I have mojo in a 5 gallon with a filter and a heater. def do your research on bettas if you want to keep her or him alive. So if you don't like alpha just think of all the aspects of your life that you like and what really sticks out for you. You could name her scarlett or somehting to do with red... or just something that means something to you! good Luck and have fun with your new friend!

by potential of "reliable environment", i assume you recommend a minimum of a 5g tank with suitable filtration and a heater, set to 80F? he's maximum in all hazard getting used to the tank. in spite of the reality that, if he does not have a heater, he's in all hazard chilly. So i might propose including one. If he's resting on the backside of the tank, examine your water parameters. verify that he replaced into presented to a completely widely used tank, and that the nitrites and ammonia are the two at 0ppm, and the nitrates are around 20ppm. as far as data and tips flow, in simple terms verify which you're housing him properly. Betta's do no longer enjoy spiky products of their tank, as they might scratch themselves fairly, so shop on with stay or silk plant life. verify you have a minimum of one hiding spot, like a cave on your betta to hunt for secure haven and secure practices whilst threatened. Betta's are carnivores, and revel in eating blood worms and brine shrimp. stay is ultimate, yet frozen and freeze-dried are different strategies besides. you will possibly be able to additionally desire to quickly your betta once or twice each week so as to sparkling out his digestive equipment. verify you're appearing weekly water variations and are changing in simple terms 25% of the water with taken care of faucet water.
