If it's OK for our government, which is (supposedly) full of grown adults, to solve all it's problems with violence and war, how can we turn around and expect children to solve their problems any more maturely?

The children that are told not to use violence are from people like you and me. There will always be war and has been right from the beginning of time and whats it all about? Land.

by telling our children not to use violence means not solving problems with their hands.

Because if the kids use violence and end up killing each other before the age of 18 or their governments legal or military recruiting age. How would nations have any new young male recruits to go out and murder other young men and people of other nations. That would be breaking the law. We can't have that.
Not al kids are told not to use violence to solve their differences.
In Africa and other countries and even in World War 2 the age of military duty for males was lowered once the men died in war.

Children are discouraged because using might as a solution only encourages someone with more might to use it against them. In human terms it is ineffective because it is too easily opposed by bringing your big brother into the equation.
Governments believe that either they are too mighty for anybody to contest their use of violence or that the cost to others of opposing them would make the exercise unrewarding.
Good and evil only apply on a human level. Governments are only looking at cost and benefit and generally believe that the end justifies the means. Easy when you are gambling somebody else life.

Because they're children and shouldn't be desensitized to acts of violence in any of its forms. So if you see kids beating on each other in the streets you're just indifferent to it?

"Well son, President Bush solves his problems through war and conflict, sure go kick that kids @$$". Yeah, that makes a whole lot of sense.

The problem that our government is dealing with is one that there is no other solution for. Same way for anyone. There are things worth fighting for and some that are not. Freedom is worth the fight. Being called a butthead is not. Kids need to be taught the difference or they will become targets for bullies, before and after they grow up.

Yes, we must learn to solve our problems peacefully and patiently to gain true effects and to show good examples to our descendants. See how Mahatma Gandhi has miraculously saved his nation with non-violence.
Violent actions were only suitable in the primitive times. Now we have greater means of education, of communication, of reconciliation, of negotiation, of consultation... to get into the core of various problems and gather the civilized strength of solidarity and reason to tackle them.
And we are greatly hopeful to see that various countries have adopted the democratic method of popular election to select people of high education and noble virtues to rule their countries in the place of brutal and ignorant dictators.

Because strength is fleeting it is only exerted by the weak of mind..

Children need to understand how to reason -- not passively engage in networked media programs that glorify violence.

Hey, we are taught that if we fight we'll get a spanking at a very young age...(got my share!) Even God had armies that killed those who would go against God. It's not just us...
