Because India is very hostile to businesses. They do not allow business to expand or shrink depending on conditions.

Enough of India's labor force is educated and hard working. Singapore and Hong Kong got rich with almost no natural resources. The difference was laws that allowed people to get rich.

Only when people get rich does the population growth rate fall. India's policies prevent people from getting rich.

The problem is not only taxes on businesses. Too much red tape and regulation prevent most business from even getting started (or they are semi-legal busineses in the slums).

The solution also involves some short term suffering by some workers who are stuck in non profitable industries that are not allowed to close by the government. Once they are allowed to close capital will be redistriubuted to profitable industries.

With more than half of Mumbai's population living in slums and a police force of 40,000 which is inadequate, slum policing may help in solving local disputes and petty crimes, and it may even thrust a more social role on the police. However, issues of accountability and sensitivity, too, are long standing and fundamental and urgently need to be addressed if the community and police have to work together with respect and understanding.

the main reason for why there is population explosion is 'coz Mumbai is a major industrial sector.People come here in search of better job oppurtunities but due to less employmentation in Mumbai people have no other choice but 2 live in slums....

I feel there should be better employment oppurtunities & industries must be set up which employ more people.....

You cannot reduce slums anywhere in india because it is poverty which creates slums and our finance minister is bent upon taxing people to such an extent that slums will only increae with time.
No expert has under taken a statistical study of expansion of slums in the post independant India. It would be an ideal research subject

First, educate the children even if it means free education. Make it a law that every child should have an education. If the parent does not send the child to school - they will pay the consequences. If they have an education the future for them will be a lot brighter. Their chances of finding a job will be increased. This will bear fruits in due course, but it will take time.

More employment opportunities

Social and affordable Housing (as we have in the UK although not as much as we need)

Incentives for people to relocate from Mumbai to less heavily populated areas.

Poor people see kids as another source for income. more the number of people more will be inflow of money in the house. girls are considered as a bane and boys are considered as a boon. for the need to have one son.. the number of kids in the family can rise to 6-7.. then .. they will have a miserable life. they don't want to understand this basic principle.

providing job is the only way to curb any malpractice.

Slums can only be reduced if we have responsible government as well as responsible citizenship - and they all understand and respect what it means.
