The International Date line - which runs from the North Pole, through the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska and south through the middle of the Pacific Ocean from there, to the South Pole.
The North Pole and South Pole are the only places in the world where there is no east or west. From the South Pole, you can only go north and from the North Pole you can only go south.

At mid-pacific ocean up to the northpole and down to the south pole is where east begins and the west ends.
At the other side of the globe, its in Turkey where east ends and west begins.
This is why the Turks seem Europeans at the same time Asians.

Hi Spartus,
For my tuppece-worth, I consider the Prime Meridian, passing through Greenwich to be the marker of this.
Everthing to the left is "Western", looking North, and places to the right are "Eastern".
This is nonesence, of course.
Most Americans & Europeans consider themeselves Western, and probably true.
When I look at the opposite meridian, at 180 degrees away, folks would consider themeselves to be " Eastern" in origin.
Occidental, or Oriental.
More to do with folks, rather than birth, I suppose.
I love getting freindly with all nationalities, here and abroad, and even learnt some Arabic, and a tad of Hindi, to converse properly with "Middle- Eastern" folks. In their home land, or in the UK.
I think therefore that the seperation between East & West is a bit of a misnomer, in that it is, to me, a wiggly line drawn on the globe,
I do not fully understand Taiwan culture & eating, nor would I expect a Taiwanese to understand my local KFC, or steak emporium.
But I would welcome the East meets West visit.
Bob.

There are two answers:
If you're looking for an absolute (one outside your personal experience), the closest you'll get is the location of a place on Earth east or west of a north-south line called the Prime Meridian. more information is available on Wikipedia (see sources, below.
From your perspective, east is everything east of you, west is everything west of you. Pardon my use of a word to define itself. Literally, for you, east meets west at you!

East ends, and west begins wherever you are, that point is you.
It's a bit like which way is left, and which way is right.

I think it depends on what ur referring to. For instance, if you were giving directions, you would say East or West from your current position.

that is kind of a tricky if you take the time to ponder, something I am trying to not due as much lately! So I would have to say that that would always depend on where exactly you would be on a map,as far as latitude and longitude . But I could be wrong so I would ask others. good luck and nice question.
