How about Pennsylvania to California with your immediate family and being the only smoker in the van? I'd do it again today. Susan S, old route 66 is amazing. If you can, spend a day in Williams, Arizona. Visit the Grand Canyon and take in the local culture. It's God's Country West.

Yes, in 1999, I drove on my own from San Diego through Arizona, New Mexico, western Texas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and back to San Diego. I visited lots of national parks (Chiricahua, Carlsbad Caverns, Mesa Verde, Rocky Mountain, Arches, Bryce Canyon) and big and small towns, visiting some relatives and friends in Los Alamos, NM and Denver, CO, and seeing what the Southwest is all about.
When I was younger, my family took some long road vacations - from San Diego to Yellowstone via the Grand Canyon and Zion, or from San Diego to Vancouver BC (I guess that counts as traveling cross-country - from south to north and back!)

As a matter of fact, when I moved from Seattle to Florida, I did just that....it was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. I love road trips, they seem to inspire me because I'm actually seeing things and not just hearing about them...I'm a seeker too I guess :)

Yes, California to the Carolinas. East coast to the west coast, back and forth several times.

My ex wouldn't let my son fly until he was ten so I made the 1000 mile drive from SoCal to Wyoming and back many many times.
Luckily we were both great road companions and have great memories.

Yup - Jersey to AZ :-)
This trip was made with a 14 year old boy, as well... somehow we made the mistake of stopping at Taco Bell. Oh, the gas smells... :-x
