If your yard is less than 1000sqft, I would opt for a weed whacker over a lawnmower. However, don't go too cheap because the cheaper weed whackers aren't usually ergonomically correct which can lead to several hours or days of discomfort.
Another alternative that you may not be aware of is robotic lawnmowers. (Yes they've been around for about 8 years) If your yard is over 2000sqft and less than 3 acres, you'd probably benefit most from them because they generally require little or no attention at all, no gas and are a huge time saver once you get them installed. They follow a schedule and can quietly mow at night and can mow all types of grass and/or weed combos.
The advantage robotic lawnmowers have over weed whackers (and lawnmowers) is that they mulch the grass much finer and will deliver a nicer looking lawn.
