There are not to many kinds of algae eatters that like cool water. Most need atleast a temp of 70 deg or higher. Seeing as you have axalotles which are more of an exotic looking creature you can go to your local fish store or other pet store that you prefer and ask if they can place special orders. If they can ask if they can order you a hillstream loach. They may also be called Butterfly or Chinese butterfly loach, butterfly pleco, or borneo loach. They can tolerate a temp as low as 66 F and as high as 76 F. You can also ask them if they have any other suggestions. Just don't go with the common pleco as they get too big and also do not stick to the algae diet for very long and will eventually not eat algae at all.

Um, plecostomus are NOT from the great lakes and will NOT survive in cold water. They come from the Amazon and require warm water to survive. I would suggest a couple snails for the cold water tanks. There aren't any algae eaters you can find in a fish store which would survive in an unheated aquarium.

plecostomus are cold water fish.

They are found in all the great lakes and tributaries in north America.

Word of caution: Just remember they get fairly large.
