The only 'women's studies' course I took was one on feminist film/interpretation of film. Of all the Film Studies courses I took at uni it proved the toughest.
It's abundantly clear that some of the men responding thus far have never taken a such a course - it's not about 'doctrine'; the course I took involved alot of essay writing. The quality of the essay is in large part determined by the author's skill in positing clear, forceful arguments. The CREDIBILITY and AUTHORITY of the source material is paramount - needless to say BUT around here this needs to be said ANYWAY. No CRANKS allowed...

I guess because people like Kev assume that Women's Studies classes are ACTUALLY about bashing men, etc, which they are not! Also, men think that feminism is a joke, so they join the classes and are extrememly surprised at what they learn, and how much material there is to cover.
I was quite surprised at the content of my women's studies class. It involved a lot of things I've never even thought of before, and I've been a feminist since I hit puberty. The essays I've had to write were complex. There is a TON of reading. They bring race, class, and colonialism into the discussion.
One thing it doesn't involve is bashing men or claiming women are better... for christ's sake, do people actually think that reputable universities would allow a program to teach stereotypes or hatred? Why do you think there's no "men's studies", people!

Because they are ignorant. They think that it's a social studies class and not an actual college course. Maybe ignorant is too harsh of a word, but they are definitely assuming something! They see the word "women" so they think it's "easy". "It's about women, it's probably FOR women, so it must be easy!". : /

All you have to do is regurgitate politically correct feminist bs and you are guaranteed at least a B. People in serious disciplines mock the various "victim group" studies courses, and rightfully so.

Particularly the men that take these classes. Many years ago, I signed up for such a class. we had an equal number of men and women in that class. By the end of the semester, not ONE male was left! ALL of the women stayed.
Why? There was a LOT of work involved- reading voluminous books, researching, composing and typing up papers. It was NOT an easy course, and was actually quite interesting.
So, to answer your question- perhaps students think of such a course as easy, not realizing that there is a vast amount of literature to study on various "women's" topics that relate to history, psychology, sociology, etc. Universities should promote these classes as such. Perhaps then, students will not think of these classes as easy "A"s.

Well because the stuff that gets put out is generally hypocritical and contradictory, with the only common denominator being men bad women good, thus leading people to believe that merely following that doctrine is what earns you an A (and being correct).
