I love reading. Some people are just better at visualizing what they read than others, and those who can't visualize well tend to get frustrated and dislike reading. It has nothing to do with intelligence. Readers tend to have better vocabulary, verbal and writing skills, so good for you. Keep reading all you can.

For some reason their imagination is broken. Usually this is due to forced reading in schools, along with analysis and investigation, which makes everything boring. The reason a joke is funny is because it is not explained in depth. If it were, the joke would be agonizing. Books are similar. We read in school, analyze to death, and hate it.
I am presently reading "Travels With Charley" by Steinbeck, and he makes a great point early on. His parents or grandparents had a cabinet of books that wasn't supposed to be opened, or the books weren't supposed to be removed, but nobody cared if the rule was broken. For this reason, he took books out all the time. In "TWC," he wonders if more people would read if everyone kept a cabinet like this in their homes.
It's the lure of the forbidden versus the nauseation of mandatory labor.
Another reason is that people think their time is valuable. I have a friend who doesn't find books boring...on the contrary, he finds them exciting...but doesn't read because they take too long. I let him off the hook because he does a lot with his free time that doesn't involve sitting in front of the TV or working on a beer belly. Others, though, think it takes too long and then waste away watching some show they'll forget all about in two days.
People don't read for various reasons. So long as they buy me books, I don't care. Let them live the way they want. They aren't hurting anyone.
In the unlikely event that they start burning your library, get worried.

There are many reasons people don't read anymore. They all seem to stem, of course, from the rise of television and video games. Why force yourself to use your imagination when you can easily have the story displayed in front of you? Also, reading involves movement of the eyeballs, and we all know that it is much easier to stare blankly in the general direction of the story. It is also much more difficult to eat a bag of potato chips while holding a book. You don't have to hold anything while watching a movie and you are free to use your hands to stuff your face.

Another reason is that kids these days don't have the attention span that kids in decades past had. Reading a book could take someone a week, when a movie based on the book only takes 2 hours. And again, it is so much cooler to see an explosion on a movie screen than to imagine it yourself.

It is really sad.

"Why DO many people hate books?" Once I picked a book from the school library in elementary school and began to read, I never looked back! In my family, only my father reads more than I do. I agree with the other answer...a short attention span definitely fits into the picture. 'Tis a shame for those people, I read my school books, and thousands more outside of school, and I haven't read a book that I hated yet.

I think it's one of natural episodes regarding our life in a family or among the crowd, I mean there might be some certain reasons for some people who don't enjoy reading. You know, there're surprisingly innumerable PhD theses in universities worldwide and international research studies on reading alone but there are relatively a few on listening, speaking and writing, the other three key language skills. This infers the importance of reading, therefore, it's great to initiate and proceed with your reading preference since it will definitely be your great treasure of knowledge, appreciation and consolation. As for those who don't read, I think we should respect their own preference.

There are lots of physiological reasons why some folks don't like reading. It is difficult for those with conditions like attention deficit disorders, vision problems, or dyslexia. Others don't like to sit still long enough to get through a book. Technology is working in their favor though. I have a dyslexic friend who used to hate books who now uploads books on cd to her iPod so she can listen while excersizing, walking her dog, etc. She is hooked and even got a library card.

I personally think that it's because the school system forces you to read books that are well...terrible! It leads people to ignore the fact that there are good books out there!
