Both my kids sucked their fingers the exact same way with 2 middle fingers in their mouths. My first daughter took a while to stop sucking her fingers, she is 7 now, but I could not get her to stop. I tried everything including the nasty stuff on the fingers, pacifier etc. It wasn't until she was in pre-school and one of the other kids called her a baby and I guess it really upset her, because she stopped sucking her fingers that day. Then my younger daughter was doing it, and my older one just would tell her all the time not to do it if she wants to be a big girl and not be called a baby at school. I still catch her occasionally at night doing it, but she makes a real effort not to do it, because she wants to be big, and only babies suck their fingers. Point is, I tried every gimmick, but the only card that worked for me was the Big Girl card! Her fingers are not like a pacifier, you can't just take them away so it can be tough, and don't expect her to stop over night. She is still only 19months, so she may not understand enough yet to quit, but as she approaches school age it will be easier to encourage her to stop. If she hasn't stopped by the time she is 2 1/2-3, you could also take her to the dentist and have the dentist tell her how bad it is. Sometimes hearing it from someone other than a family member can help a child to stop the bad habit.

My neice had the same exac problem she is 5 now and hasnt suck on her two middle fingers since she was 3 but still has calluses on her fingers and ridges in her fingernails from it. But it was kinda just something that went away on its own. They make a nail polish type formula that doesnt wash off as easy. It is called no bite you can find it at any pharmacy. But my best advise would be just when ever you see her doing it gently take her fingers out of her mouth and distract her give her a toy or something , you probably wont be able to stop it everytime, but sooner or later she will out of habit not do it because she knows you are going to stop her. It may just be a comfort issue too try giving her a blanket or a stuffed animal to cuddle with. I hope I helped.

I have learned that if this is causing a child pain, they will stop on their own. I had one child that sucked her thumb until she was twelve. I never did a thing about it, she was my baby and she only did it when she was going to sleep. She eventually did stop and it did not effect her teeth at all. She has perfect teeth. She is a well rounded, self assured person and I am glad that I did not choose to fight that battle. If you are really concerned there is a product that you paint onto their fingers and it tastes awful!! This will cause them to cry and spit and probably throw a fit. But it is an option. You can find it in the baby section at the drug store. Is this really a battle that you want to fight? If it is causing her pain, she may just stop on her own. I always say, when it comes to raising children, choose your battles wisely.
