The Thirty Years' War was fought between 1618 and 1648, principally on the territory of today's Germany, and involved most of the major European continental powers. Although it was from the outset a religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics, the rivalry between the Habsburg dynasty and other powers was also a central motive, as shown by the fact that Catholic France even supported the Protestant side, increasing France-Habsburg rivalry.

The impact of the Thirty Years' War and related episodes of famine and disease was devastating. The war may have lasted for 30 years, but the conflicts that triggered it continued unresolved for a much longer time. The war ended with the Treaty of Westphalia. Hope I helped you.

The Bourbon dynasty. It wouldn't have been the Stuarts(in England) as there was a civil war in England not long after the 30 yrs war which led to the Commonwealth and the Stuarts being overthrown, although they did return to power - not with any of the influence once had . It wouldn't have been Spain as the ruling dynasty was in decline and the Bourbons married into that line! Germany was disbanded (some say the birth of German nationalism came from this) and weakened. The Hapsburgs (Holy Roman Empire) were in decline. The republic of United Provinces (the netherlands) was formally declared and would be a thorn in the french side until 1785. That is the only 'threat' other than the Spanish Bourbons were later to be. To French dominance at that time! Therefore leaving the Oranges (influencing the Netherlands Royal dynasty) who were to later influence the British Royal line. Therefore I reform the answer and would say it was William of Orange!

Actually France was one of the threatened powers during the thirty years war and are considered to be the country who gained the most from the war, even though they were not involved in the war at all at the start of it.

The Germanic speaking states gained power as well because of the 30 years war. While some people consider religion was the predominate factor, it was not.

The 30 years war were a series of wars called the Wars of Succession and was fought mostly between Spain and the Austria-Hungary Empire to see who would gain control of bits and pieces of the Holy Roman Empire left-overs now called the Low Countries and Germany.

The Austria-Hungary Empire found itself surrounded by Spanish armies, the armies in the Low Countries and Germany in the North and Spain itself in the south. France found itself in the exact same position. It was surrounded by territories controlled by Spain.

During the 30 years war Protestantism was on the rise but it should be remembered that both Protestant and Catholic Germanic speaking states were able to gain their independence from Spain as a result of the war.

Austaria-Hungary tried to push Spain from the Germanic states and take them over for themselves. However the first part of the war went mostly in Spain's favor and Austria-Hungary had virtually lost the war at this point, which concerned France greatly because if Spain won, it would be in a very good position to conquer France.

So France joined in the war against Spain and also supported the Protestants in Germany to gain allies within Spain's Germanic territories.

France asked England for help and England sent a small force to help France. England was still peeved at Spain for trying to conquer them. One very small battle turned out to be the turning point in the war. A larger Spanish army blundered into the English army which it didn't know was in France and the English Army won a freak victory over Spain. The French with some help from Austria-Hungary then proceeded to carry out a series of successful large scale campaigns against Spain.

The war, in terms of territory in Europe was a saw off, neither France, Spain or Austria-Hungary were able to gain any territory in Europe.

However, things did change drastically in favor for the Low Countries and the other Germanic Speaking territories formerly ruled by Spain.

France wanted the territories but they were also had been drained financially by the war and they knew that if they tried to take control of Spain's former Germanic territories, it's former allies, England and Austria-Hungary would quickly become enemies and another long war which it couldn't afford would be the result.

So the 30 years war resulted in France becoming the dominate military power in Europe, it had the most battle hardened soldiers and a slew of winning Generals. Because Spain was bankrupted by the war, France gained confidence, built up it's navy and was able to start to build it's colonies in other parts of the world.

Spain was the biggest loser, it had lost all it's Germanic speaking territories but it also was unable to support it's Carribean and Pacific navies during the war. England through a series of technical improvements in its navy, was able to become the predominate sea power. After the 30 years war they conquered several of Spain's Carribean territories and stripped Spain of two small bits of South America, Belize and Guyana (sp).

But more importantly, for the first time Spain was unable to stop British ships from entering the Pacific and trading with India and China. Spain's fleet in the Philippines was defeated in a series of sea battles by Britain and although England didn't know it at the time those sea battles in the far off Pacific were the spark that let to the British Empire.

And the other winners were the Germanic territories. While they became a multitude of seperate nations, they were independent and self ruling and started a trading Empire called the Hanseatic League which was a very rich trading empire that traded with countries between Britain and all the Scandanavian nations along the North Sea and Russia and the Hanseatic League became a source of great wealth for the newly independent Germanic language states.

So France found itself with the most powerful army in Europe and because it knew no European nation was strong enough to take it on, France gained confidence and began to build an Empire with territories in North America, the Carribean, Africa and South East Asia.

France didn't start the war, they were not involved in it all in the beginning, but by the end of the war they were the dominant military power. Nobody dared take them on in Europe.
