Why do people think it's important to be cool?

I can understand younger people needing to fit in, but it seems to be spilling over into older people in their 30s 40s & even 50s, whats up with that.

... Everyone want to fit into the Stereotypical mold the media has set for us. They show and say what they feel is cool so everyone jumps on the band wagon instead of being their own person and making their own style!................... ........................................... ..............................

Because basically all the human beings (especially younger people) have the need to be perfect and flawless in so many way shape and form. No one wants to look like a dope. Younger people think it's so crucial to be cool because they obviously still need acceptance and approval from people around them. They are in the stage in their life while they are searching for something for them. They have to prove something from them. When you look cool, people would naturally perceive you as a cool, brainy and skillful. They they would respect you better than those who don't look adept at all.

I think because it doesn't have anything to do with age, it is just the innate human desire to fit in and be accepted, no matter how old or young you are. Human beings don't like being alone, and they don't want to be alone, so they will want to be cool and be looked up to by others so they won't feel so alone.

I think ideally people should just be happy with themselves, and not feel so insecure. But of course, this world isn't perfect!

People are social animals and have a strong desire to do what is necessary to fit into the herd as they see it. Alternately they have a strong desire to reproduce, and would like to be viewed positively by members of the opposite sex. In both cases being viewed as cool is probably a good thing.

Nobody, young or old, wants to be alone. We are individuals but we subconsciously (or consciously) want to interact with people like our selves and have some form of companionship. I think most people would rather assimilate than be alone or outcasted.
