Believe it or not, if it is dark enough, you do not need a telescope to see those. A good pair of binoculars will render both sights visible.

I have a little telescope, which zooms from 20x to 60x. Even at 20x, within the realm of many binoculars, you can see the major moons easily and the rings too.

If you are not sure about it being dark enough there, maybe you should get a good set of binocs with a tripod, and try one of those parks. If it is still too bright, what you bought is of more use anyway.

It's not just light pollution (although that is real bad out there) but it's also all of the crud in the air which
a. reflects surface light and
b. attenuates incoming light.

You really need to get out of the city if you want the seeing to be any good at all. Maybe take the Palmdale freeway a few miles back up into the Angeles mountains where the air is clear and there's little or no light pollution.

HTH ☺

Saturn and Jupiter and such are very bright objects and thus don't need dark skies for you to observe them. In fact trying to get to dark skies just to observe bright planets and the moon would be a waste of time.

There are plenty of areas within a couple hours drive from the LA area that have very dark skies. If you are interested in astronomy, you should join the local astronomy club and learn about star parties they do, and get involved.

No but get one that's fairly easy to transport. A short drive can take you far enough out of the city lights to get a decent view of things.

I would get an 8" Schmidt Cassegrain. They have enough aperture to see some deep space things away from the city, enough focal length to get a decent view of planet, and are still small enough to transport easily.
