After coming back from 2 weeks business trip, our clean house turned into a big mess. How do you motivate your wife to keep the house clean? Her excuse is work is too busy and she is tired.

I actually do all the cleaning. The problem is I went away for 2 weeks and the house became a big mess. She just seemed not motivated to keep the house clean. She's totally okay with the mess.

Yes. We are both working professionals and have no kids. But we have busy schedules. I'm actually pretty easy going and can tolerate the mess. But I can only stand the mess up to a point . It went over my limit when I got back from my two weeks business trip.

Thanks T-Rex! I think my wife is just like your wife 4 years ago! It seems like I need to retrain her from ground up! Please share more of your tips. Is any good books for to read?

In my case I got down right pissy. Every personality is different and you have to find what works for your wife.

I used to complain bitterly until I got smart. I cleaned the house and organized everything. When she got home from work she looked around the house, look at my face, and realized her life was about to change. I sat her down and told her this is how it’s going to be. I said I refuse to live in a pigpen. If you can't respect our living space then you don't respect our relationship or me. I said we can do this the hard way or we can do this the easy way. Just know I am willing to put our relationship on the line to have this change.

I then asked her how could I be of service to her in making the necessary changes? What I had to do was help her fight her old habits. She was from the Philippines and never had to clean anything. She is an only child very religious and never been in a relationship. She had no cooking skills when we married and she wanted to go out to eat everyday. Whenever she left a room it somehow became a total mess. I had to literally teach her everything about managing a household.

Fast forward to the 4 years later. She is an excellent cook and we rarely argue about anything. Even with her busy work schedule she manages to keep the major area of the house cleaned. We still have a problem with her accumulated piles of papers but it is been relegated to just the office. The rest of the house is kept pretty pristine. I totally had to teach her how to live without creating a big mess. I called it clean as you go. If you use a dish rinse it and put it the dishwasher immediately when you are done with it and wipe the counter clean if needed. When you are done watching TV turn everything off fold the throws and straiten the cushions on the couch.

It took 2 years to get her retrained but she is much happier and more effective in life period. You have to put your foot down and treat her like a child if needed because she is acting like one. If you are better skilled in this area give her the benefit of your expertise. Your wife is creaming for guidance so be there for her.

Only if the wife works too. If she is a stay at home wife then cleaning the house is up to her. However, regardless of the situation the man should be the one to do the home improvement type of stuff. That is pretty much how it works in our house anyway and it seems fair to us. Other couples may see it differently though. It is what works for each individual couple but ideally if the wife is stay at home she should do most of the cleaning of the house. Especially if there are no kids.

you were the one who kept it clean? or she wasnt motivated to clean it to your liking since you were away? how does one motivate anyone to clean a house? its boring and redundant to most of the population. It has to be done or you get bugs and germs and you cant find anything. peace
