He will find plenty on calligraphy on the web and on long scroll.
You should also be able to get books from your local library
and I would imagine they will have even better books on it in their reference library.Presentation will count here if you can buy him a
calligraphy pen.Tell him to make the most of his effort because
good hand writing will be with him all his life. You do not say if his project has to be written or typed. If he presents something well done with his project that will look pretty good.Writing about the history of the two will be good.

The tradition of art on scrolls is asian, especially Chinese and Japanese. Many of the scrolls reflect the ideas of the people they were intended for, such as their hopes, accomplishments, and attitudes in life. Some are paintings. If you want to use calligraphic writing in Japanese or Chinese, grab a language dictionary from the library and be sure to have him copy them carefully. Or make up his own words to use and get a book (many in the library for calligraphy or drafting are excellent) to use for inspiration. You may find some help in a book on mandalas.

Write something historical.
Get a calligraphy pen, slant it down about 30 to 45 degree angle and write.
It will be beautiful........with broad and narrow strokes.
Good luck.
