I think it's because, years ago, people that were mentally challenged were not spoken of. These same people were locked away in institutions and considered hopeless. Movies like these show society that these people are every bit worthy of love, a good home and happiness. Because they have such a disability doesn't mean that they are not a productive member of society ... far from it. Some are more productive than those that don't have a disability ... and these movies demonstrate that.

What I consider them to be are 'eye openers' for the rest of us, one that was direly needed. I'm happy to see that movie writers and directors seen this need as well. :)

In many movies there's an action hero, or a rich guy/girl, or someone who's ridiculously beautiful....all these characters are often people that not everyone can relate to.

Instead, movies about the disabled have characters who aren't pretentious or flawed and I think this helps everyone(even those who arent disabled) connect to the characters on a more human level. Maybe deep down all of us want life to be a beautiful/simple as it was most of the time to Forest Gump or Rainman...

I don't know, I just feel really inspired uplifted for some reason when watching movies like that. It makes me think that maybe those who are disabled have something special that the rest of us dont

It shows an average person. Not some pretentious rich kid and the girl he wins or visa versa. It's shows that humans have flaws and that in reality we are not all these perfect beings. The story lines are usually more enduring to watch, even when it's fiction you feel you have learned something or glimpsed into a real human struggle. They aren't all empty entertainment like car chases, and shoot out scenes. Personal opinion, others here might disagree and you can too.

Ah yes the "tard Oscars" People seem to think it takes great personal sacrifice for an actor to play a person with a disability (when in fact it is very easy). But also because we love stories about people overcoming adversity.

I think it is something that kind of intruiges people and I think they are somewhat afraid to ask questions about it in life for fear of offending anyone..so, they learn something by watching these movies..that and they are all endearing films.

I think it inspires people when they see someone who overcomes adversity, yet they're still naive
