STI 4.5 untuned
GTO 4.9

STI far better car to get. Better handling breaking able to tune the car stock turbo and injector etc and make the 0-60 time around 4.2. Now keep in mind that doing that with any car means that you have to rev the RPM's in the 6k range and dump it. Hell on your trans, clutch due to AWD. But the options that you have with customizing that car are just awesome. Once you put and exhaust on that car you will fall in love with the sound. I am not a big fan of the huge wing they put on the back but i think that the limited ones you can get the short wing.

GTO is American made which IMO is the only thing that is good about that car. It looks nothing like the old school GTO's which is what all were hoping. Yes there are some kits for it but getting into that high of a HP means that you just have a spin machine. Meaning that the back wheels will just spin and not grip and the STI that you are trying to race has been long gone and u put on a smoke show.

Check eBay about what you can buy for both cars and just take note on how many pages there are of things you can get for the STI compared to the GTO, Make your decision after you do that.

the 0-60 times on the STIs are somewhat midleading. To do the times they did in magazines, you have to do like a 7000 RPM clutch dump, which is just hell on your tranny and clutch. In a real world situation, the GTO would prob be a few 10ths quicker to 60.

That being said, the STi is a far better performing car. The GTO is a boat in the turns, and doesnt drive anywhere as well as the STi. The sti also has great brakes on it.

if you just want to go fast in a straight line, the GTO will be a better bet (esp considering how bad their resale value is). If you want to track the car, then the STI hands down.

Ok, so the reality of the situation is this. If you can "never afford" a WRX or STi, then you will never afford a rally car. Most rally drivers, even amateurs in the lowest classes, carry as much money in spare parts as the car itself costs. Rally is not a cheap sport. If you want a cheap rally car, find a Mazda 323GTX, Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-X or Galant VR-4. They will be much cheaper than a WRX, aren't as quick and will likely break easier, but you will have more money left over to upgrade and get replacement spare parts.

STi= 4.5
GTO= 4.8
The GTO has more potential for power. Sure there are 500hp STis out there but it probably cost around 50k just to get there where as a 5.7 litre v-8 can see that much power with out breaking the bank account.

The GTO with a LS2 motor is 0-60 in 4.8sec and 1/4 mile in 13.0
The STI is 0-60 in 4.5 and 1/4 mile in 13.0.

My personall opinion is get the STI, it has a turbo, better gas milage, awd, and cheaper.
