Doctors will tell you 4-6 months.
But if your baby is breastfed, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for at LEAST six months, and if your baby's iron levels are fine (have them tested at his/her six month check-up if you are not sure), there is no reason to hurry the solids and in fact there are many reasons to delay them, including prevention of developing allergies, the opportunity to allow your child's digestive system to finish developing, and continued prevention against illness provided by breastmilk, among others.
If your baby is formula-fed, the formula may not be enough after 4-6 months. Formula does not change with your baby's needs as breastmilk does, and so you must guess what each individual needs and accomodate accordingly.
Ask your doctor if your baby is on formula, but you may need to do some of your own research if your baby is breastfed. Doctors these days are trained to treat formula-fed babies and often give outdated or inaccurate advice regarding breastfed babies (mine did).

A baby should not have solids (baby food or baby cereal) until six months of age. The American Academy of Pediatrics just changed it from 4 to 6 months of age to 6 months. Breast milk is the best and most complete. Formula is next in line. Some people swear by giving their babies cereal much earlier. It's kind of a controversial topic, especially between new moms and their mothers and mothers-in-law. Back a generation a go you fed your babies. I know my moms thought I was starving my kids because I didn't give them cereal and when my babies woke up every 3 hours in the first weeks to nurse I got lots of dirty looks. My mother-in-law thinks it's not right for a baby to wake up so much at night. They say that by giving a baby cereal and baby food they sleep longer. It's true, they do, because their little tummies have such a hard time digesting it - it takes so long. I didn't have a problem waking up to nurse - and she never was constipated or any of those type troubles you hear about. Now, again, others swear by giving cereal much sooner. My babies did great and I do know of a few babies who were fed solids pretty early and did just as great. It does truly come down to the parents decision - as they know their babies best. Always check with the pediatrician before making any changes, though!! Good luck!!

well the baby needs formula or breastmilk for the first year and should be the main source of food. but cereal and or baby food is reccomended to start at 6 months, but if the baby isnt satisfied with just milk before then (like around 4 monthish) then a little cereal wont hurt

Formula/breast milk should be given for 12 months (at least). If you're breastfeeding, it is usually recommended to continue that as long as you want to. I have heard of people breastfeeding exclusively for up to 12 months. They say that you can start giving some thin cereal at 6 months of age. Once the baby is used to the cereal, then you can start baby food vegetables, then fruit. Only do one new food a week.

do no longer combination formulation and breastmilk you would be dropping any effective breast milk you nevertheless have if he won't take it. If he's been EBF then you quite should not be giving the bottles. Have dad or a pal do those first few feedings till at last he gets used to the belief. you would be wanting to try this only as in case you have been thoroughly weaning him from a bottle. it rather is going to be a similar thought. you would be wanting to start with the least wanted feeding. mutually with no longer the morning or bedtime feedings or anyother one the place your toddler seems to linger (convenience nurse) it ought to take a month or so in case you want your breasts to no longer go through. Have somebody else provide a bottle of expressed milk for a pair days and make it a similar time. Then after a pair days swap to formulation and supply up pumping for that feeding. Then slowly upload extra feedings of only formulation. Then in case you determine you prefer to artwork on the renowned feedings you could. Many mothers can formulation feed yet nevertheless do morning nursing or bedtime nursings so that is no longer so irritating on your toddler in the event that they actually savour breastfeeding. those feedings you quite would possibly no longer have the means to do for a on a similar time as. So in the adventure that your hubby ought to do those that must be superb for my area. in case you flow chilly turkey nursing you would be wanting to pump to the two sell off or feed on the occasional bottle. you do no longer prefer to easily flow away your breasts as they are or you would be in discomfort. Take time and allow your toddler instruction manual you. do no longer stress something yet make it as "favourite" as beginning new ingredients. solid luck. i'm nevertheless nursing at 6 months and looking out forward to while we can provide up. i understand i ought to furnish up at any time yet she likes it to lots and that i understand that is healthful for her. So I understand your place. My first toddler hated nursing so we stopped at 3 months. savour having your breasts returned!!!!
