a sort of virus although it does not replicate itself - it is something which is hidden in a file and, when activated, it does terrible damage ... like a Friday 13th thingy - obviously named after the Trojan Horse

A Trojan Horse is simply a malicious computer program that damages your computer system upon installation. The program claims to do one thing, such as pretending to be a game, but instead do something else when you run them. Some nasty Trojans will actually attempt to erase your hard drive. They were originally named after the historic Trojan horse used by the Greeks to conquer Troy because the first Trojan horse programs pretended to be innocent games or applications. Trojan horses have no way to replicate themselves automatically. Below you will find some of the various ways that viral related attacks can be transmitted and spread.

A trojan is a malicious piece of software that comprimises the security of the machine that its installed on. Its different from a virus in the sense that a virus simply attempts to replicate itself. A trojan does not neccessarily try to spread itself, and tries to masquerade as a legitimate piece of software, while opening up an internet connection from which hackers can remotely control your computer. For instance, you might download a program that claims to be a screen saver, but while running, it steals your passwords and sends them to someone.

A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer.
The term comes from the a Greek story of the Trojan War, in which the Greeks give a giant wooden horse to their foes, the Trojans, ostensibly as a peace offering. But after the Trojans drag the horse inside their city walls, Greek soldiers sneak out of the horse's hollow belly and open the city gates, allowing their compatriots to pour in and capture Troy.
Trojan horses are broken down in classification based on how they breach systems and the damage they cause. The seven main types of Trojan horses are:
Remote Access Trojans
Data Sending Trojans
Destructive Trojans
Proxy Trojans
FTP Trojans
security software disabler Trojans
denial-of-service attack (DoS) Trojans
