I am a visual learner, but I can also pick up sounds I hear and am able to play them on many different instruments. Dancing since I was 3, I picked up great timing. I first noticed I was able to do this when I was around 7 years old. I have always had a passion for music, and I admire Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes and his rhythm guitar style in his music.
I'm stumped if I should take lessons, or I should try to teach myself at least the basics first. Any suggestions?

I, too, was self-taught. I also had a great ear and amazing ability. Now that I am an adult and a music teacher, I recommend taking lessons. A good teacher will see your talent and be able to challenge you. He/she will give you assignments that allow you to use your ear and to learn some things on your own. There are so many teachers out there so feel free to try out different ones until you find the teacher that fits with your abilities and goals.

Even though I did a great job on my own as a kid/teen, I know I could've learned twice as much if I'd had a teacher.

I taught myself how to play the guitar. I learned the chords, and then learned about notation without having to go to lessons. I found the best way to learn is simply to practice. No teacher can help you past a certain point, and lessons can be expensive. If you are interested in learning how to play an acoustic guitar I don't think you need lessons (it would be a different matter if you were learning to play classical guitar)

i think you should take lessons. if you're gonna be self-taught a few months before taking guitar lessons, you might develop bad habits or something like that..

Always start out cheap and work your way up to expensive.

Try to teach yourself first... then you are at least familiar with terms and techniques, if not proficient.

If teaching yourself is just too frustrating, then seek lessons.

If you teach yourself, you might never be able to sight-read the notes from a score. I've dealt with many musicians who can jam, but if you give them a written arrangement for a tune, they're totally lost.

I'd recommend taking lessons first to get the basics, tempo, dynamics, learn to read sheet music, tabs.

Take lessons--- and learn what you need to practice for what you want to do without wasting time.
