Probably a North/South dimension. A little like Woodie Guthries' This Land Is Your Land song. Could also represent two extremes in a spiritual sense. Hollywood vs a real Wood(s), Glitter vs substance, that sort of thing. Remember, it was the late '60's/early '70's. Neil was a Canadian, to boot.

i think he's trying to say that he's searched the Forrest(redwood) and the city(Hollywood) for a heart of gold... he's saying that he's searched everywhere

That little town in CA. just off of Highway 101 about 15 miles south of San Fransisco.!!!!!
