since you are asking that question here, and majority of people who were asking questions in this portal can't seem to find any answers at all...then my answer is there is no such team. But fyi, there is buffalo sabres but it is not new jersey's hockey team name.
I also included a list of the previous names of NJ's hockey team from the very beginning, hope it will help you.
New Jersey Devils
1974-75 to 1975-76 as Kansas City Scouts
1976-77 to 1981-82 as Colorado Rockies
1982-83 to present as New Jersey Devils

There is no such "professional" team named NJ Sabres, but it doesn't necessarily mean, there isn't a local, small league with a team by that name. As far as professional teams with the name Sabres, they are as follows:
Buffalo Sabres (Buffalo, NY) NHL 1970-07
Dallas Sabres (Dallas, TX) GCHL 2001-02
Miami-Valley Sabres (Troy, OH) AAHL 1987-89
Sheffield Sabres (Sheffield, England) BHL 1985-91
Stettler Sabres (Stettler, ALTA) ASHL 1977-78
Troy Sabres (Troy, OH) CnHL 1982-86
Troy Sabres (Troy, OH) AAHL 1986-87
Welland Sabres (Welland, ONT) SOJHL 1970-76

The New Jersey Devils and the Buffalo Sabres are the NHL teams, may be a minor league or different than the NHL.

It is very possible your friend plays for an amateur team named the NJ Sabres. The professional team in NJ is Devils, as others have pointed out.
