iMovie doesn't burn any DVDs, it's a program to edit movies or create a slide show with. After creating a project in iMovie you can transfer the project to iDVD and burn it from there. Your Mac doesn't need a DVD burner to edit movies in iMovie but it does need a burner to use iDVD. You can edit a movie then create a disc image of it to transfer and burn on a Mac that has a DVD burner or you can use an external DVD burner with a Mac.

To find out if your Mac supports DVD burning, go to Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info... > Hardware > Disc Burning and if you see this listed, your Mac can burn DVDs

DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL

It doesn't have to have +R DL(dual layer) on the list.
