It depends on the crime. If they're a killer or a rapist, in prison, they are probably killing and raping, just like they did on the outside. Since we allow men to rape each other in prison, who is being tortured here? The rapist's and sadist's are having a great time. If they're a child molester, they're being raped, since they're not too popular in prison. So at least they are being severely punished. But what if you're a first time offender, or a non-violent offender, do they deserve to be raped, daily, and get aids?
I think non-violent and violent prisoners should be in different prisons. At least try to rehabilitate the ones we have a chance with, so we don't have to pay for keeping them in prison. As far as the violent ones go, let em rot. Two million prisoners are a lot to pay for.

I wish the old days of bread and water would be brought back! People have to work and pay for the same luxuries that inmates get for free! It's not right. Not only should the benefits they get be changed but also the punishments. Some offenses should have the sentencing guidelines change. For instance drug dealers should get an automatic 10 year sentence without the possibility of parole. It should be written on the books that anyone who molests or abuses a child should get life in prison without the possibility of parole, and anyone who rapes or kills a child should get an automatic death sentence which will be carried out within 2 months of sentencing. Harsher laws like these would definitely curb the criminal element. Right now offenders get more rights and considerations than the victims and their families and that's wrong. I believe the property of an offender should be signed over to the victim or their family also. The things I would change if I were in the position to write the laws of this country! And I'd go after the animals who go overseas to offend and come back here until the next time. I'd burn them.

No, we are not "too soft" on criminals.
Our prisons are already miserable.
To anyone who says differently, I'd like to know What prison have you been visiting? I'd like to arrange for a cherished friend to be transferred there! The top notch medical/dental care I'm always hearing about would be nice!He had a small cavity in one tooth and the answer was to pull the tooth, he needs to see a doctor to renew a prescription for a chronic condition (no, it's not a drug with any recreational potential, it's Prilosec) but can't see the doc because he is not bleeding, and when he does get that script renewed, he'll be paying for it or rather either his mom or I will be doing so. The situation has gotten so bad with prison health care that a federal judge recently ordered the whole department into recievership.
He shares a 6 x 12 cell with one other man, and counts himself lucky that there are not 3 in that cell due to the amazingly overcrowded state of the facility, he gets to leave that cell about 4 hours a day, including shower, chow, dayroom and yard time... and THAT is when the facility is not on lockdown due to drastic understaffing, ...on lockdown, it really is in the cell, 24/7, food passed through the door, etc the only thing that keeps going is the mail (and by the way, I send him paper, envelopes and postage, unless it is a letter to one's attorney of record AND there is no money on one's books, the prison does not pay for letters)....the educational programs, IF an inmate qualifies AND if there is a slot available in the class.....and surely you see the need to try to educate these people to improve the chances of their becoming productive citizens upon release?
The showers are hot and reasonably clean, but inmates buy their own soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.
The food is a joke, and is barely legal in quantity and quality... most inmates get VERY creative with the top ramen that is available at the commisary...
As to recreational activities,... Television in the day room where what to watch is decided by vote...any TVs or radios in the cells were not provided by the state, either the inmate or someone like me purchased them and like quarterly packages and phone calls (collect and incredibly costly) they are a privilige that is EARNED... Surely you can see the value of rewarding good behavior?
Our prisons are overcrowded, understaffed and very few offer any meaningful rehabilitation, creating a pressure cooker from which inmates are released more angry and less prepared to be "citizens" than they were at sentencing.
Take your blinders off- It takes only a moment of rage, desperation, greed, stupidity or simple bad luck to become a felon... only a small percentage of our inmates are awful, antisocial monsters, the overwhelming majority are just like you, me and the guy who changes your oil.
