The ending is pretty confusing to me. Why did Mark Wahlberg do what he did to Matt Damon in the very end? Was he acting as a good guy or a bad guy?

Sargent Dignam shot him when he found out that Sullivan was the "rat" in the department, but since he knew Costigain was dead and did not have access to the papers or proof, he shot him. He was actually a good guy. I dont think he shot him because of the fight in the department.

Warning: Spoiler!

Mark Wahlberg knew that he could never prove that Matt Damon was the villain inside the police department, so he dispensed some vigilante justice. I guess 'good' or 'bad' is a matter of opinion - I was pleased enough with the outcome.

It's true, he was a bad guy from the start. He was in on it. Remember how Frank Costello said that they're were guys inside?Well, there were different "rats" in the movie. Frank was for the FBI. The FBI had one in Costello crew (the one who died), Costigan was for the police, Sullivan was for Costello. There were alot. Dignam (wahlberg) was also a "rat." but it wasnt identified for whom. Watch Infernal Affairs. It was based on those 3 Infernal Affairs movies.

Bad guy. He killed him for revenge. Mark Wahlberg was bad from the start.

Revenge. It's that simple. Damon's character was a murderer and a mole in the police force.
