The Castro district is perfectly safe. It is a really nice area. Don't let stupid ignorant fools ruin your opinion of an area, go there and decide for yourself. The mission and richmond districts are not very safe but the castro is fine. There is always some danger in larger cities because there are so many people you don't know who is who and who is going to do what so just go live your life and do what you want to do and go where you want. There are shootings and other crimes in nice areas too so don't be too worried about what district you are in, especially the castro- it is safe as anywhere else you have been.

The castro is not dangerous at all and is one of the sunniest and most vibrant areas of San Francisco. The predominant gay population has revitalized the neighborhood from a working class neighborhood. There are many beautiful victorian homes and tons of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. The Castro is also a great transportation area and has the J train, Muni, and is walkable to the mission street Bart station. The mission can be somewhat sketchy and borders the castro. Stay away from mission street and streets below it unless you need to take BART. Do check out Dolores Park and Duboce Park they are both beautiful. Have fun!

When they said southern areas, I think they meant the mission district. Castro district is not dangerous.

As big cities go it's relatively safe. It isn't entirely without any form of crime, but you'd be very unlucky to even see it.
I don't particularly like the area, but that's got nothing to do with the safety or sexual orientation of the area, I'm just not that keen on the particular architecture and style of the area. I wouldn't have any hesitation to go there based on safety concerns.

By southern areas they meant hunter's point. The castro is safe (barring visits from suburban gay-bashers).

Ok, first off ignore the little boys who think gay men are going to rape you if you bend over to pick up your keys. That is their sick fantasy, not yours.
Castro district if perfectly safe. Very friendly, lots of bars and restaurants to enjoy. My personal favorite bar in the Castro is the Mix on 18th at Castro. A friendly neighborhood pub with a pool table, a grill and patio out back.
If you want something upscale try 2223 Market or Mecca at Church and Market. Both great clubs with a cool vibe and great food.
The Castro theater is an art house, lots of classic film and independent film fests.
Enjoy!

Heres a general rule of thumb for san francisco from me, id be reliable because i was born and raised here.
If you were to split san francisco into 4 equal box parts then it would be like this.
SouthWest - Mostly Sunset District The Suburbs, lots and lots of houses forever. Has a high population of Asian descent. Generally Safe
NorthWest - Richmond distrct/nation park leading to Golden Gate Bridge - Suburbs/ Buisness - Safe
NorthEast - Buisness/Tourist Spots/Some parts of Ghettos - Shopping and stuff and where ALL of the skyscrapers are located - Moderatly Fine to Moderatly Dangerous
SouthEast - The ghettos Mission Distrct/Hunters Point = NO GO ZONE.
Central? who cares

Occasionally its the "outsiders" who may make it dangerous at night when there's alot of parties or neighborhood-wide celebrations going on.
