Fans normally break into two groups: 1) Giants, Yankees, Rangers, Knicks or 2) Jets, Mets, Devils/Islanders, Nets. Group 1 are normally people from NYC or New York State. Group 2 are normally people from New Jersey, mostly northern or central since south Jersey fans normally follow Philadelphia teams.

The Yankees are the best because they have actually won or have come close to it consistently over the past few years. When people talk about sports in New York, most people talk about the Yankees. The Mets have bad pitching problems, the Jets were great, but Penningtion is too inconsistent, and the Giants won't be going anywhere until Eli Manning gets more experience and they can replace Tiki Barber.

Anyhow, I think I understand what you're asking.
I am a Jets-Yankees-Islanders fan, because my dad was.
His story is a bit more confusing. He was a Giants-Yankees fan from old. They played in the same park. When the Giants moved to Jersey, he basically said screw you guys and became a Jets fan. For some reason or another, he saw a hockey game and there was some awesome fights in it. He fell in love with hockey and Islanders tickets were cheaper than Rangers tickets.
So there I am. Jets-Yanks-Isles.
Most NYers, however, will like the Mets-Jets because they shared a stadium.

the best combo is mets+jets. people who like the giants usually also like the yankees. the reason not to like the yankees is because they're filthy rich and use their money to buy good players. they dont care about team play, but about personal achievments. thats why they've been losing in the playoffs so many times lately. people who like the yankees are front-runners. same with the giants, except that people who like the giants arent front-runners, but stupid. they like the giants only because payton mannings brother is there and because tiki barber is there
