It's the curse of Oscar. There is a guy named Oscar trapped inside the statue, and he curses anyone who wins a best actor/actress award.
But what about Hilary Swank...?

Well, you have to remember, winning an Oscar is an actor being recognized by an Academy of their peers. The Academy is made of of people in the film industry, Directors, Producers, Technical people and finally Actors. Many times poeple in the film industry will see an outstanding performance where the general public sees a boring or understated performance. Just like most movie critics are partial to art house and independent films, a lot of actors and Movie industry folk are as well.
And if we've learned anything from reading most critics reviews and seeing the statue winners on Oscar night, they don't necessarily speak for the opinions of the mass public.
For instance, Adrien Brody won best actor for the film The Pianist, which was a great performance. But the pianist didn't make a huge amount of money, and didn't get a whole lot of recognition in the media, so people were unaware of it, and by association unaware of Brody.
But then look at a star like Jim Carrey. He's never won an oscar, and I don't think he's ever even been nominated, Yet every movie he puts out will consistently gross over $200 Million because people want to see him on screen, and because of that, he lands huge role after huge role.
So it's all about having box office clout and a strong screen prescence. If an actor doesn't have both, they'll go by the wayside.

I'd hardly say that Kevin Spacey & Gwenyth Paltrow's careers are bad ones. Spacey is successfully managing a theater in England, & Paltrow took time off to have a family. I understand what you are saying though. This is the supposed "Oscar Curse," which is usually equated to Best Actress winners; i.e Halle Berry. "Catwoman" anyone? Maybe some of them feel a lot of pressure to do brilliant work & either slink away from the spotlight or try to do lighter fare. I don't know. This topic is often discussed in such magazines as Entertainment Weekly. There are many theories. Run your query in a search engine & I'm sure you will find articles on the subject.

I think that sometimes winning an oscar will cause a person to be "priced out of the market". Then after they cool off a bit, they take smaller roles just to keep working. Also, I think that when actors win an Oscar, everything becomes sort of anticlimactic after that.

when you have money, sometimes all you wanna do is play with toilets.
isn't the Oscar the premiere career goal of hollywood? isn't a Gold Medal the premier career goal of the Olympics.
After Tara Lipnski and Sarah Hughes won gold, both retired professionally at ages 14 and 16, respectively.
Now they're happy doing whatever they want.

I was just thinking the same thing the other day. What ever happened to Helen Hunt? Remember when she won an Oscar? Then there was Twister and she just seemed to disappear.

My feeling is that they got Oscars because of 1 movie .... before and after movies were not good at all.
They were never consistent.
Consistent actors don't usually get Oscars

You work to get the good roles to get the oscar to get the better roles ro get the money. They are in it for the money. The money gives them the luxury of not having to work as often as they would otherwise.
