Crafting a Riddle?

I want to make a riddle from scratch, with no real drawing from riddles that already exist. Anyone have any pointers on how to make one that's creative and smooth flowing?

All I can think is to read other people's riddles first, and see if you can come up with one that is different. Also study puns.
