How do you get rid of gnats?! They've invaded my apartment and I can't put the plants outside yet. I've tried the insecticide soap, and it doesn't work. Must be animal friendly and guaranteed not to kill the 30 year old plant! Thanks!

I have about 30+ houseplants and I've had gnats from time to time. The way I get rid of them is by mixing 4 cups of water with 2/3 tablespoon vinegar (2 teaspoons). Water your plants with this solution instead of straight water. I've never had a problem with it adversely affecting my plants. It helps to kill their eggs and larvae that are in the dirt. It's also advisable to only water when absolutely necessary. Gnats like moisture.

By the way, it also kills fungi in houseplant pots, such as mushrooms and molds. And, when put into a spray bottle, you can spray it on your houseplants' stems and leaves to control and kill spider mites. When spraying for spider mites, spray once or even twice a day for 2 to 3 days until you don't see evidence of them any longer. :o)

You've GOT to get sunlight on the soil, even if it's just through a window! They're called fungus gnats for a reason!

A temporary solution (if your plant can tolerate acidic soil) is to water it with coffee. It causes the soil to become more acidic and less welcoming for the larvae.

I had that probably once. I bought some plant spray specifically for gnats at walmart. I can't remember the name of it (sorry), but it worked very good. My plants lived. Look for it in the garden section.

Good luck!

Take all the plants to the bathtub and give them a shower. That should help. As they are in the shower clean all the areas the plants have been.
