Think about using your skills in comic books and perhaps even in advertising. If it's what you really want don't give up. You may need to take other jobs to keep yourself going along the way, but just keep doing your art.

Not much. As newspapers consolidate there are fewer and fewer jobs for comic strip artists and editorial cartoonists. And if you're thinking of animation, nearly all the world's animation is done by studios in Korea these days. Sad to say, there's not much of a market for cartooning these days.
